YOUTH LEADERSHIP EVENTS

General Rules

  1. The events will consist of two divisions. Each division will be determined by the grade the student was enrolled in as of January 1, 2016.
    1. Junior Division: 4th – 8th Grade
    2. Senior Division: 9th – 12th Grade
  2. Insect and Leaf Collections will have an additional Elementary Division (Kindergarten - 3rd Grade).
  3. Checks will be mailed after the expo.
  4. Any item that is not covered by these rules (or section rules) will be decided by the Youth Leadership Committee.

Youth Cook-off

  1. Each contestant will furnish his/her own charcoal grill, barbecue sauce, and other necessary equipment. Electric or gas heated grills may not be used in this contest. Charcoal, lighter, and meat will be provided by TRAE.
  2. All contestants will assemble at the contest site at 4:30 PM on Thursday. The contest will begin following the announcement of the rules to the participants.
  3. Each contestant will prepare one chicken breast, one slice of pork loin, and one 1/3 pound hamburger. No garnishes or side foods will be permitted.
  4. The contestant may not bring previously seasoned or similarly pretreated meat. The only meat allowed in the contest are those provided by the contest sponsor.
  5. A two hour time limit will be strictly enforced for the contest. The participant will turn in the finished product at the end of the stated cooking tie or penalties will be enforced. Contestants may submit finished product before the stated end time.
  6. Meat may not be placed in baskets to aid in turning.
  7. Contestants must work alone unless an emergency arises and officials agree to a change in procedure.
  8. 1st Place: $50.00, 2nd Place: $25.00

Insect Collection

  1. Contestants will display a collection of insects in any manner they desire.
  2. Each division will have a different minimum number. There will be no maximum number.
    1. Elementary Division: 5 specimens
    2. Junior Division: 10 specimens
    3. Senior Division: 20 specimens
  3. Entries will be received from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, September 20, 2016.
  4. Top three contestants in each division will be recognized with awards.
  5. 1st Place: $15, 2nd Place - $10, 3rd Place - $5

Leaf Collection

  1. Contestants will display a collection of tree leaves in any manner they desire.
  2. Each division will have a different minimum number. There will be no maximum number.
    1. Elementary Division: 5 specimens
    2. Junior Division: 10 specimens
    3. Senior Division: 20 specimens
  3. Entries will be received from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, September 20, 2016.
  4. Top three contestants in each division will be recognized with awards.
  5. 1st Place: $8, 2nd Place - $6, 3rd Place - $4

Skill-a-thon

Sponsored by Farm Credit of Mid-America

  1. An event will be held for beef, swine, goats, poultry and sheep. Twenty questions will be answered with three additional tie breakers.
  2. Each Skill-a-thon will be held in conjunction with the individual species shows (a participant does not have to be an exhibitor to compete).
  3. Participants will compete individually.
  4. Premiums: 1st Place: $25.00, 2nd Place: $15.00, 3rd Place: $10.00

  • Sheep: Wednesday, September 21, 2016, 3:30pm to 5:30pm
  • Goat: Thursday, September 22, 2016, 3:30pm to 5:30pm
  • Swine: Friday, September 23, 2016, 2:30pm to 4:30pm
  • Beef: Saturday, September 24, 2016, 10:30am to 12:30pm
  • Poultry: Saturday, September 24, 2016, 10:30am to 12:30pm
